About the Artist

"I can teach anyone to paint!" boasted Kathy, the art teacher at the old Cheltenham Market, where Southland now stands. Being a person who cannot even draw "stick" figures, I decided to challenge her confidence. The next thing I knew, she had me buying tubes of oil paint, recommending a special brand, various sized brushes and of course, the canvas panels. Whoopee! I was on the way. One of my first lessons was to use two tubes of paint, one white and the other Payne's Grey. The idea was to mix these colours into various shades from white, greys to very dark. In no time I had a picture vaguely resembling a "nude". Leonardo, eat your heart out I thought!! From that moment on I was hooked into trying to paint anything I saw. To be honest, I was always astonished if the painting looked anything like the subject!
